Scrap Junior Rates Now
In Australia, hundreds of thousands of young workers are being paid less simply because of their age.
The outdated system of junior rates mean workers under the age of 21 can be paid a fraction of the adult minimum wage.
The outdated system of junior rates mean workers under the age of 21 can be paid a fraction of the adult minimum wage.
Young workers on junior rates miss out on an average of $8,483 per year, resulting in $3.5 billion of lost wages.
It’s time for the Australian Government to end this unfair and outdated practice and scrap junior rates now.
Why is this important?
Young workers still face the same expenses as other workers in rent, groceries, education costs and more.
But in our unfair system, an 18-year-old with years of experience could be paid less than their 21-year-old newly hired colleague just because of their age.
