Save Waverley War Memorial Hospital

Dear Minister,
We the undersigned call for:
- immediate listing of the site on the NSW Heritage Register,
- restoration of historic gardens, sweeping driveway leading from the original entry gateway, and the central axis from Edina to the pond,
- conservation of magnificent heritage trees,
- hospital to remain as respite care, rehabilitation and aged health care facility,
- no evictions of elderly residents for development; all to be re-housed on site,
- low scale development no higher than 4 storeys, with good access to the outdoors,
- majority of accommodation as supported living for the aged, with some independent living units (ILUs),
- remove Building A from Uniting Church’s proposed plan, to save some of Waverley’s oldest trees, the ecological corridor, and allow for restoration of the heritage gardens.

Why is this important?
Waverley is in danger of losing one of its iconic heritage estates. It was gifted to the Methodist Church in 1919 to support WWI veterans. The gardens and associated buildings of the War Memorial Hospital are a community asset, which has been enjoyed for over a century.
Uniting has prepared a concept plan which proposes large residential flats buildings of up to 7 storeys which will destroy the heritage gardens and overwhelm the site and the surrounding neighbourhood. Magnificent fig trees will be demolished and the historic sweeping entry driveway lost.
Uniting is evicting elderly residents to make way for this development.
Most of the proposed flats buildings are for over 55s ILUs not for supported aged care. This change will lose the health care values and services core to the site’s long history, and important to eastern Sydney.
We are keen to hear about your connections with the War Memorial Hospital and other services at the site.
