To: Jane Fenton, Chair of Queen Vic Market Board

Open Letter: Jane, don't sack your hardworking cleaners

Thanks to your support, cleaners have won back jobs before Christmas!

Yesterday we had a meeting with the City of Melbourne CEO.

In that meeting, we were given an undertaking that they will work with the us and their network of contractors, to assist affected workers to secure employment.

We want to thank you, the Lord Mayor Sally Capp and Councillors for helping to get this outcome!

In unity,
United Workers Union

Dear Jane,

Cleaners at Queen Vic Market work hard every day to keep the Market clean and safe. Together, these cleaners have decades of experience in delivering for the Market, it's tenants, and shoppers.

But now, weeks before Christmas, Queen Vic Market is threatening to sack three quarters of their loyal cleaners. An incoming cleaning contractor has failed to offer jobs to dozens of cleaners.

No one deserves to lose their job less than a month before Christmas for no reason at all.

Yet the Market’s cleaners are the ones who will be left scrambling to pay their bills and wondering how they will put food on the table over Christmas. Without your intervention, more than half the cleaners at Queen Vic Market are going to lose their jobs.

You have received accolades for the work you do with people going through tough times, working to get them the support they need. The cleaners at the Market need your support right now to ensure they don’t lose their job over Christmas.

It’s time to support your cleaners.

Why is this important?

Cleaners at Queen Vic Market ensure that it remains clean and safe. Sacking three quarters of the cleaning workforce will mean a serious reduction in the cleanliness of the markets. These cleaners have worked here loyally for many years and have expert knowledge that cannot be easily replaced.

Without these cleaners Queen Vic Market won't be the thriving hub it has been. We need Jane Fenton to act now.
