In 2014 Footscray residents won a heavy truck curfew. Since then the Government has not monitored or enforced truck usage of Footscray's streets during curfew hours meaning as many trucks now use our streets as when the curfew was introduced. To make matters worse, the Department of Transport has authorised Road Trains to use Footscray residential streets 24/7. They did this without any community consultation or notification.
We know that it is the big companies who are responsible - not truck drivers who are just doing their jobs. We also know that trucks need to use our streets - just not late at night and early in the morning.
We are calling on The Honourable Ben Carroll, Minister for Roads and Road Safety to immediately end all the exemptions for heavy trucks and road trains during the curfew hours in Footscray.
Why is this important?
We are concerned Footscray residents who love our community – Footscray is more than a heavy truck highway. Heavy trucks and Road Trains are causing noise pollution which is disrupting sleep. Constant exhaust fumes are endangering our health. While the Government has promised that there will be a complete truck ban following the completion of the West Gate Tunnel, we can’t wait. We need action now!
