Transport for NSW: Flexible Work is Essential!

Flexible work is not a perk—it’s essential.  It’s essential for your employees’ work-life balance and their mental health.  It’s essential for the attraction and retention of skilled workers.  And it’s also essential for productivity at work.

Yet, the proposed Workplace Presence Policy released on 26 February undermines certainty for thousands of employees by requiring them to reapply for flexible work arrangements every 12 months.

The proposed policy requires all non-frontline employees to work principally from an approved Transport workplace, with limited hybrid options:

  • 100% workplace attendance (with ad hoc remote work requests), or
  • A minimum of 50% office attendance, with at least 5 days per month in the designated Team Hub.
  • Any exceptions require an individual hybrid agreement, subject to senior management approval and mandatory annual renewal.

This policy ignores the realities of modern work and disproportionately impacts women, caregivers, and regional workers who rely on flexibility to balance their careers and personal responsibilities.

We are Transport for NSW employees who require flexible work arrangements and demand certainty in our employment, including:

  • Guaranteed long-term flexible work arrangements – Not short-term approvals that force workers to reapply each year.
  • A policy that reflects employee needs – TfNSW's own engagement showed strong support for hybrid work, yet the new policy prioritises mandatory office attendance.
  • Genuine workplace flexibility – The ability to continue working remotely without unnecessary barriers or excessive red tape.

We are flexible workers, and we need certainty in our work arrangements. We have signed this petition to demand a Workplace Presence Policy that truly supports employees—not one that forces them to fight for flexibility every year.

Why is this important?

Flexible work is not a perk—it’s essential. It’s essential for your employees’ work-life balance and their mental health. It’s essential for the attraction and retention of skilled workers. And it’s also essential for productivity at work.
