Calling on ANU’s Academic Colleges to Do Better for Working Students
ANU’s colleges must acknowledge the significant challenges of accessibility faced by its working students and implement reforms to academic policy accordingly.
These reforms should include:
- Greater flexibility and choice for classes, including more online and out of hours (after 5:00pm) options
- Standardised assessment deadlines (e.g. Friday 11:59pm, not Monday 4:00pm)
- Grades from the first half of the semester must be released before the ‘last date to drop courses without failure’ date
ANU’s Academic Colleges should also look into providing:
- Greater flexibility around swapping tutorials, and post-semester exam availability.
- Less emphasis on attendance grades
Why is this important?
The outcomes of this petition should benefit students who face accessibility challenges, such as working students, students from regional or rural areas, students living with disability, students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, international students, and students with caring commitments and so on.
